About Niqui

Niqui Kommerkamp - Detail of Ikaros

Niqui Kommerkamp lives and works in Amsterdam. Her love for storytelling is reflected in her art; beautiful ceramic sculptures and paintings, often with subdued colors, but also a strong appearance.

She is inspired by organic, natural and industrial objects and fascinated by how elements and time leave their mark on such objects.

Color is mainly added by applying oxides and pigments on leather-hard clay. She leaves most of her work unglazed. To protect it from smudging, she applies one or more thin layers of liquid wax.

She often makes her own clay by recycling scraps of clay. Some of these mixtures may contain a (small) percentage of porcelain added to grog clay.

There’s no discrimination; red, black or white clay, it all ends up in the same bucket. Because all these different types of clay are combined, it is important that it’s mixed well.

Niqui is a member of the NVK (the Dutch Ceramists Association). Her work is exhibited in the Netherlands and in France and a part is in stock and available at Galerie Stam in Amsterdam
